This month we’re going to the field from 20 December – 2 January. In addition to having the world’s highest xmas party, New Year’s party, and frog-a-thon, we hope to walk the edge of the retreating glacier and mark its position using our GPS. This will allow us to compare the position of the ice to previous years, and update information about the rapid retreat of the ice wall. We’ve also set up a couple of cairns (rock piles) which act as a fixed position from which we can measure the distance to the ice and, over time, see how far away the ice has retreated. I was very interested to read the article linked below.
“Letter written in 1959 and buried in Arctic cairn tells distance to glacier and asks anyone finding it to re-measure; researchers discover 233-foot retreat” http://www.grindtv.com/outdoor/outposts/post/message-in-a-bottle-reveals-fact-about-glacier/
I love scientists!! Go Bucks! 😉
